5 Problems with Gouache, and How to Solve Them
Gouache presents at least five difficulties: it freezes, it dries fast, it reactivates, it looks chalky, and it shifts values when it dries. James Gurney faces each of these challenges, answering viewer questions as he paints Hudson River iceboats.
Follow along as Gurney paints two gouache studies of iceboats, one outside in sub-freezing weather, and the other in the studio. High quality audio capture and a "driver's eye view" of the painting makes the experience immersive and engaging. Gurney takes spoken and written questions from fellow painters who have grappled with the same issues.
He makes mistakes and fixes them, and shows you how to set up an environment for testing the paint and combining it with other media. He walks you through the choices and options so that you can control the viscosity, opacity, drying time, and surface sheen of your gouache paint.
As a bonus, he includes behind the scenes of his "liquid greenscreen" special effects, and includes the following instructive videos: Painting a Winter Pond, Painting from Inside a Car, Photo-Real Drug Store, and Sacrificing Detail for Mood.
