Fortified City - Photo Reference Pack
Description:
Located in Brouage, this French Fortified City was built in 1555 and was at first an international commercial hub for salt trading and became a military base under the drive of its governor: Richelieu.
The development of the Brouage fortifications to avoid capsizing in the open sea when their holds were empty, ships used stones for ballast which had to be thrown overboard when approaching ports. The citadel was built on a vast pile of these ballast stones amassed since the Middle Ages. This small elevation was enough to dominate the littoral swamps which naturally protects the place.
This citadel also has some secret passages with four posterns, one on each battlement. These small entrances led to its two underground harbours and path to the swamps hidden by the vegetation.
I also took photos of the descriptive boards which give you a deeper understanding about the environment. The texts are written in French and in English.
Main features of the citadel:
- 400m of walls on each sides
- 7 bastions
- 19 watch towers
- 7 curtains walls of 11m
- 2 underground harbours
- 4 public privies
- 4000 inhabitants in the 17th century
